Highlighted Features

New Landing PageBack to Top

Bing Dictionary provides a new and improved landing page that includes "Sentence of the Day", "Look and Learn", "Recently Added" and other new functions.

New Landing Page:

Pinyin sentence and Triple-AlignmentBack to Top

This feature is aimed at Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) learners. It exposes transliteration of a bilingual sentence pair for language learning, and allows for instant highlighting of the aligned word in a “triple alignment” style – very useful for learning, and quite convenient. (It is only exposed in English version of Engkoo)

CollocationBack to Top

This feature is aimed at helping English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners write like a native English speaker. These collocations are statistically ranked and break down by part-of-speech, so the most common ‘expressions’ bubble to the top.

Personal English TutorBack to Top

Personal English Tutor was acting as a computer assisted language teacher. A lively, lip sync talking head can make the interface more engaging and attention catching. Since the talking head can speak any text sentence the real human speaker never say before, it can be used for synthesizing karoke style video for teaching English online.

Phonetic SearchBack to Top

When looking for Chinese words, specifically for those words where you know the pronunciation but don't know the spelling, you can input Pinyin to search.Bing Dictionary can then help you to find the correct word.

for example: You want to search for "你好" but do not know how to spell the words. You can therefore input "nihao" and Bing Dictionary will provide you with a list of suggestions:

Wildcard Sentence SearchBack to Top

Everyone has the experienced not quite knowing which word should be used when writing - or perhaps you want to learn and explore language by discovering new sentences using wildcards. Bing Dictionary can help you via the ‘wildcard search’ feature. To use it, simply input your sentence and put in a part-of-speech wildcard where you'd like Bing Dictionary to fill in.

Example:

Input:I v. English  (v. is the part-of-speech wildcard)

Result:

Bing Dictionary supports searching with the following wildcards: n.(noun), v.(verb), adj.(adjective), adv.(adverb), prep.(preposition).

Note that a current limitation is that you can only use one wildcard at a time in your query.

Word for Word Highlighting in Bilingual SentencesBack to Top

When you check 'word alignment' box on the sentence explorer you can see the cross-language word highlighted and as you mouse over you can see other aligned terms. Use it to not only learn how to construct sentences in the opposite language, but also instantly get context sensitive translations. Note that Bing Dictionary uses a machine learning technique to intelligently 'guess' the word mappings, so in some cases the mapping is not perfect or may be missing if there is no appropriate mapping.

Interactive TabsBack to Top

Bing Dictionary creates interactive tabs for each query, meaning that you can revisit a previously queried word by selecting its tab. When there are too many tabs, a dropdown button drap.jpg will be displayed at the left end. Click it to show the query history list, as below.

To compare two words, drag and drop one tab onto on another - they can be combines (for more details, please go to Easy Word Compare);
Easy Word Compare Back to Top

Some words in English can be very similar in meaning, so it can sometimes be difficult to select the right one. Bing Dictionary can help you with the 'entry comparison' feature. To use this, just drag the tab of one word and drop it onto the tab of the word you'd like to compare it to; a new merged tab is created that displays the two entries side by side. When you have finished with the comparison, you can click the s2.gif icon to separate them.

e.g. compare 'take' and 'bring'.

Action: drag the 'take' tab onto that of 'bring' and drop.

Native Speaker Sounding PronunciationsBack to Top

Bing Dictionary provides audio for words and sample sentences that are created by our unique Text-to-Speech engine with surprisingly human-like results. Have a listen by clicking the sound icon ba.jpg at the end of a sentence.

Comprehensive SuggestionsBack to Top

The 'Autocomplete' feature in Bing Dictionary helps you by suggesting terms as you type. If your input is not correct and no result can be found, the 'Did-You-Mean' feature will provide a list of suggestions. Note that you can also type in Pinyin (Chinese Romanization, for example "ni hao") to get a Chinese suggestion, similar the experience provided by IMEs (Input Method Editors).

Example 1: Autocomplete

If you try to query 'Greate Wall', Bing Dictionary will provide a suggestion list after you type 'Great W'

Example 2:Missing type

If you try to query 'search', but type in 'serche'. Bing Dictionary won't be able to find this word in its dictionary. Instead it will show a 'did-you-mean' list.

Sample Sentence FilteringBack to Top

Filtering by inflection

e.g. mouse has several inflections, such as mice.

Example 1: the sample sentence contains 'mice'.

Click the word 'mice' in the inflection area.

Filtering by 'category', 'source' and 'readability'

Example 1: To isolate the technical form of a term:

Select “技术(technical)” in the first drop down list - which represents 'category'

Other helpful things include filtering by source (the middle drop down list) to only view sentences from offline dictionaries or those mined solely from the web. The advantage of this feature is to potentially isolate more recent usage of a term by finding web sentences, or sticking to more traditional forms by selecting offline dictionaries.

Finally, you can also filter by readability difficulty (the right most drop down list) to isolate sentences based on your reading level. That is, you can find easy, medium, or more challenging sentences which usually involve different levels of vocabulary and grammatical knowledge.

When a user inputs text that takes up more than one line, the search box will expand automatically.
